Sport, activities and sporting events in Munich
Throughout the year Munich plays host to top quality domestic and international sporting events. And Munich has a lot to offer for those who enjoy participating in sport themselves too.
Here is a quick overview of both sides of Munich’s sporting coin:
Sport for spectators: sporting events
Football
Bayern Munich
The German league championship record holder is one of the best clubs in the world. News, important dates and photos of the team can be found at www.fcbayern.de
TSV 1860 Munich
The “Lions” were originally Munich’s top team. They played in the Bundesliga from 1963 (Bayern followed 2 years later). Information and tickets available at www.tsv1860.de
The Allianz Arena
The new stadium was built for the FIFA Football World Cup, which was held in Germany in 2006. It was designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron, who also designed the stadium for another “FCB” club, FC Basel in Switzerland. The site belongs to the city, whilst the two clubs each paid equal amounts towards the stadium. The futuristic “lifebelt” lights the stadium red when Bayern are playing at home, and blue when it’s the turn of 1860 Munich.
Ice hockey
EHC Munich
The team, which was founded in 1998, is based at Munich’s Olympic Ice Rink. The first team plays successfully in the second division of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL).
